I’ve recently been inspired to write a little bit about family photography and what defines it. I consider myself to be primarily a family photographer. To me, this includes couples ( a family is still a family with or without children), couple’s with fur babies, couple’s with human babies, single parent families, mixed families and any other combination of individuals who consider themselves to be FAMILY.  

Not long ago I held a conversation with a newly single parent (not this lovely mama) who expressed to me her hesitancy in having photos taken with only herself and her children because she didn’t have a “complete family”…This statement took me by surprise and I found myself intrigued, wondering how many other single parents were out there thinking the same way. 

I want to say this to anyone who might be having these thoughts: YOU ARE COMPLETE. What you are going through is profound and incredible, and your relationship with your children is so much more than worth it. Having been a single parent for years, I had family photos taken of just myself and my kids several times, and they are photographs that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Not only are they a reminder of where I’ve been and what I’ve been through, they are a testament to my strength, and to the bond that my girls and I share. Those images are absolutely priceless to me. I will be first to encourage everyone…document your days. It doesn’t matter if you feel like things aren’t perfect, you are worthy, and it is important. 

Embrace the moment you are in, embrace today! Embrace the picture perfect moments and all of the moments in between.
